Oh God, I’m so angry my hands are shaking.
Above are tweets (from males as compiled by Jeremy Vine) in response to Marion Bartoli winning Wimbledon today. A recurring theme: her physical appearance, or the fact she’s not the “normal” when it comes to an athlete.
I was rooting for Sabine, she’s been one of my favourite athletes for a while, but that doesn’t mean I resent Marion’s success. Marion outplayed Sabine and the result shows that.  She’s worked incredibly hard to get to where she is and I remember watching the 2007 final when she lost to Venus Williams (by a similar score line).  Tell me, how does her appearance affect how hard she has worked and how her appearance has any relation to her performance as a tennis player?
That’s right, it doesn’t.
I guess if it were up to these tossers, they would be watching an Adriana Lima lookalike in every final but that’s not tennis.  Every woman on the tennis court has dedicated their life to the sport, just as much as all of the men have.  Billie Jean King dedicated her life to equalising tennis as much as possible for men and women, something which all of the current female participants are indebted to her for.
As Billie Jean said: “It is very hard to be a female leader. While it is assumed that any man, no matter how tough, has a soft side … any female leader is assumed to be one-dimensional.”
Fuck your aesthetic preferences. Bartoli won because she made the shots and has dedicated her life to the sport.  Added to the fact she has a 175 IQ, I’m sure she could destroy all of these assholes in academia and on the court.
