Spanish Soccer Star Alfredo di Stefano smokes a cigarette as he talks to newsmen at the Spanish Embassy immediately after his release by communist kidnappers in Caracas, Venezuela. Stefano, in Caracas with his team of Real Madrid, was held prisoner for 56 hours in a Caracas apartment by members of the outlawed pro-communist Armed Forces for National Liberation. FALN, which seeks to overthrow President Romulo Betancourt, utilized the kidnapping as a publicity stunt and to embarrass the Venezuelan government. Date: 26/08/1963
To score a goal with the crest of Real Madrid on your chest is a wish that even women have. I know of some who would give everything to play for Madrid and score. “Alfredo, what do you feel when you score at the Bernabéu?”, they ask me with enthusiasm and envy and add “If I scored a goal with Madrid, I could die in peace." "I was told when I got to the dressing room. It is not good news for football, for those who know him, for those who are close to him.
Álfredo was always very close to me, I feel for him, I have great respect for him and I hope that he will recover. I only have words of gratitude towards him.” — Gonzalo Higuaín, upon learning of Di Stéfano’s heart attack
The answer, much of the time, was that you could not- and Di Stefano knew it. Ten minutes into one game, he turned to Fidel Ugarte, a young defender, and said: “Are you going to follow me everywhere, sonny?”
Nervously, Ugarte replied: “Yes, my coach told me I have to.”
“Ok,” shrugged Di Stefano, “sure, you can follow me about. You might even learn something”" Sid Lowe’s Fear and Loathing in La Liga: Barcelona vs Real Madrid
